I've been wanting to work these into my plan for a while now, but with my right shoulder needing rest, I haven't tried them. Can I do them only using my left (non-dominant) hand? I'm not talking about building the program around them, but maybe as a 5 sets of 5 so I can do something upper body (or whole body, as the author points out)?

I don't see why not.

It's a full body blast, so the arm is kind of incidental.

Just don't go long term without some kind of balancing exercise for the right side.

That's my two cents, anyway. Check all answers with Charles.

By the way...who's Sean Barker?!!

Awesome article John! Very motivating. It definitely makes me want to give it a try when my program allows. Just one thing... Do you think everyone at the gym will be impressed when I start doing it with the little pink dumbbells?

I never had much luck with the snatches but love the one hand swing. Do you have an opinion on pros/cons in comparison?

Cheers Ingolf

By this, do you mean a one arm dumbbell swing?

I have kettlebells and I know that exercise, but I've not heard of a DB swing, and have not done one.

Having written that, I'd say that they are doing similar but different things for similar but different results.

In my own little world, KB swings are mostly endurance and strength endurance builders.

The snatch, at the upper weight end, is mostly strength, and stength endurance. I find that if I really concentrate and can lift some really heavy weight, I'm getting enough cardio to wipe me out, and lighten what I am able to do for the rest of my workout. I really push it. My workout partner calls it 'a hernia waiting to happen,' but I disagree. I've done this lift for years without a single injury, and I'm 47 right now - and very careful about NOT getting injuries. I never worry about it with the snatch.

Incidentally, I'll happily be corrected by Charles or anyone else who actually knows this stuff for certain. I'm giving my opinion here.

I've been training with this movement for over a month now. I really like it - it's got the elements of explosiveness and unilateral compensation that are exactly what I was looking for. I moved relatively quickly up to 60/70 lbs, which I'm training both sides with at the moment. It doesn't seem to aggravate the shoulder in the same way as an overhead press, although I'm very strict in emphasizing leg drive and minimizing contributions from shoulder or tricep. I'm sure I could get up more weight, but at cost to the strictness and increasing risk to the sore shoulder, so for now 70 will have to do. Its fun to watch people as I go back to the rack for another dumbell - I definitely get a bit of an audience.

Yeah, what an attention-whore...
