I hear you Phil, and have had very similar experiences myself.
I definitely have this type A personality. its really all about harnessing it in some fashion.
And it really is just a struggle with myself, i dont do it to impress anyone, to win anyone over, to prove anything. i just do it.
This why im so drawn to weightlifting now. I like the numbers, the progress... those things you can never deny. It shows me and tells me where im at, where ive been, and where im going to go. This keeps my "self" in check so to speak.

This article came at exactly the right time for me. Just yesterday I was discussing these things with a friend. I wouldn't call myself an addictive or obsessive personality (he did), but I do tend to do things all the way and to ignore any resulting pain or inconvenience. This sometimes leaves me exhausted or even ill. I have Crohn's Disease, and when I neglect that for too long it roars up and demands attention. My friend was beating me up for being like that, pushing myself too far, risking my health. I should be more moderate, accept OK as good enough. I didn't quite know what to say to that, except that I really enjoyed giving things my best.
I now realize that it's not just a bad trait that needs to be changed. It is also the reason that I can do anything I want, make anything happen, achieve great things. My life would have been very different (for the worse) if I had given in to every little thing I encountered on the way. Thanks for reminding me of that!
Weightlifting is great. I can give it my all, improve myself every single time - and it has built-in restrictions. Rest is mandatory to keep improving and training too much or too long doesn't help progress either.
The only problem is that there's so much to learn. I spend hours and hours reading about bio-mechanics, exercise technique, nutrition, program design, etc. But then, that's the way I am, always striving to be better than before.
