Default Helene's Journeys

I am Grounded's sister (older lol) who had a great visit with him at the Bed and Barbell last month. Until I discovered Staley Training I had given up on a future of backpacking, tennis etc because I bought into all the hype about age, etc and what is and what isn't possible. So I have chosen to get out of the box and go for fitness and the life that I want to live into.
So, I have just received my first program from Charles Staley (who doesn't think I am a lost cause apparently) and am going to be reporting on this thread my assignments and PR's - and don't you dare laugh! Thank you Charles and Phil for taking on this challenge!

Today's activity: walked .6 miles in 14 min 47 sec

Difficulty 6 0r 7.

It was 4 min to the .3 mile marker - 10 min from there to the end - .6 (lol)

Observations:
Started brisk short steps, elbows swinging behind, arms parallel to ground. Markedly slower after .3 marker - still in form tho. By .5 legs heavy, mouth breathing began, could still talk outloud to myself but in two or three words at a time. Progressively slowed down - did not stop. No pain to speak of - just muscles wld not cooperate. At the .5 mark - fell out of form to slow longer strides. For years I have thought I could not go beyond 1/2 mile until I lost a bunch of weight so the .6 is important.....

Good first workout Helene, and good reporting too!

Also maybe make notes on how you're feeling tomorrow, etc.

I'd take your second walk as soon as you feel completely recovered, which I'm guessing will be in about 2 days...

Ok, strategy paid off. I looked at Saturdays walk info and decided to be a smarter race horse. Did not start off at my fastest pace - just a little less brisk pace. Results:

Walked the .6 miles in 13 min 35 sec! A new PR lol!

Difficilty still 6 or 7

Still 4 min to the .3 mile marker but only 9 this time to the .6.

Observations: Felt stiff and loggy to begin with but did not reflect that in the pace. Loosened up by the .3 marker. At the .5 was mouth breathing again but had a bit more breath control - did not drop form this time - kept walking at a pace to a song in my head a bit slower than the first half but no stopping - worked up a good sweat and a little bit of hunger - gonna go cook fresh spinach and eggs. Feel alert and energized.

What I learned from this was it looks like it is more productive not to spend everything in the first half of the track with not much leftover for the rest.

I have a problem with the food (fuel) part. I have effectively shut down my body to think its starving - was existing on 8 - 900 cal per day to lose weight which has not happened to a significant degree. Grounded convinced me to eat 5 or 6 times per day - heavy on the protein. Ok but big improvement still needed here. It is now 11:00 am and all I have had is coffee with sugar- free creamer and 3 swallows pom juice (no added sugar) - my home grown pomagranites are almost ready to eat and then I will eat them instead of the juice. Bad sleep habits contribute - night owl is me - get to bed around 1 or 2 a.m. - up around 7:30 - 8:30 on a good day. So late start on food energy for the day. Charles, I will keep a log starting today to send to you.

Awesome Job on the training Helene and the log. Your DOING IT!!!!

Now just get ONE habit at a time Make it a MUST to wake and get some protein in thats it just get soemthing in you. There is NO better time to eat then first thing in the morning you then have alllllllll day to use that and it give you greater energy. I would not pay much attention to What is is as much as at first just getting it in you what ever it is. You can change that later once step one is habit.

Ok then, here is the results of my 3rd timed walk. New PR!!

Route .6 mi in 13 min flat Details:

to .3mi 4 min 55 sec - slowest time ever (sucked)

to .6 from .3 to .6 8 min 5 sec NEW PR on the home stretch...

Observations, how did I do this?

ok, walk started out energized today but a wall kicked in early - legs did not want to walk in brisk energetic pace. When I saw I was behind on the back stretch at .3, I started walking to the song in my head immediately instead of waiting to the wall at .5. Result - got thru the .5 wall easier today, ignored
breathing (allergy) issues and kept up the pace to the end. That said, howeveer, I will rate this a high 7 today as a lot more effort was expended to come from behind. Had to go to dentist for 2 hours right after - now home, fed and feeling great!!! Knees are a little stiff and the right one a little painful but ignorable. Wow the strategy worked - that is really incouraging!!!!
